Private Lessons: Vocal technique, coaChing

I offer individualized instruction tailored to the specific needs of each student. Exercises are chosen based on what you need, in the moment and over the long term, to develop your voice, your individual sound, and healthy technique for a lifetime of singing. My teaching is based on the principles of Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri method, an integrative method of vocal training based on function and physiology, with the utmost respect for the individual and the creative, expressive art of singing. When appropriate, lessons include musicianship skills like ear- and rhythm-training and basics of reading music, as well as methods for developing ease, relaxation, and freer self-expression. I have experience working with adults and children, and beginners are warmly welcomed. Please email with any questions you may have, and feel free to schedule a first lesson without any obligation to continue.

Andrea is a complete professional with the pipes to back it up. She has the gift of voice and an even greater gift for being able to share that gift with others through her teaching techniques. What a wonderful experience to work with her!!
Tia Harris

J has done so well with you, and has developed a love for singing. She was accepted in [2 high school] performing arts program[s]. I know that your talent aided her greatly in these accomplishments. Her music teacher is very talented and is very impressed with J's musical knowledge. Due to a scheduling mix-up, J had to be placed in a class with all seniors, but the teacher said this worked out perfectly for her, because the freshmen were very behind compared to her. We owe a lot of thanks to you.

Miss Andrea is such an amazing teacher. We do voice lessons over Skype since I am too far away to meet in person. I've learned so much from her and would never have been able to be where I am now in my singing without her. Andrea always takes time to listen to my thoughts, questions, and concerns, which is so helpful, and well appreciated. I know you will adore and love her as much as I have over the years!
Elliott Jarrett

I want to say what a generous spirit she has! I emailed her last year because I was having problems. . . I was back to singing normally after taking her advice! Andrea showed that she still genuinely cared for my welfare. She is a wonderful teacher!

WORKSHOPS: JAZZ VOCALS, PERFORMANCE

I offer workshops and classes in jazz singing and in improvisation, and no matter what the topic, in making music with greater freedom and spontaneity. I've taught clinics and master classes at the University of Cape Town, South Africa; Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber, Dresden, Germany; Cal Poly, Pomona, CA; Main Street Music, Erlangen, Germany; International Women in Jazz, NY; California Jazz Conservatory; Hunter College Elementary School, NY; and more.

Workshops are entirely adaptable to be appropriate and accessible for everyone from untrained musicians to advanced students, and
are adaptable for college jazz band courses — all instruments. I focus on creating a safe, supportive environment in which people are able to tap into their "inner music" and express themselves more freely and joyously, all the while absorbing and building skills, knowledge, and awareness — and having a great time!

Please contact me if you're interested in having me teach at your institution, or if you'd like to organize a workshop.

I loved taking Andrea’s class [Jazz Singer's Preparedness Guide] and look forward to taking more!  She’s so supportive and knowledgeable, and helps each of us where we need more help. I learned so much!

This was my third session with Andrea Wolper. I'm amazed at how much I've learned in these workshops. I came to the first one very shy and hesitant but I'm gaining more and more confidence under Andrea's watchful eyes and ears. Her comments and suggestions are very inspirational. Don't know how she does it but she can "zero in" on some aspect of my performance and offer insight into what could make it more meaningful. Forget the saying "Those who can do; those who can't teach," as Andrea can do both and much, much more!
JR, New York

Andrea Wolper’s musical and interpersonal skills are immense and I highly recommend her workshops. I make my living as a music educator and I’ve discovered that one of the biggest challenges is teaching a group of people who have different skill-sets and different expectations. My daughter and I signed up to do a Vocal Workshop with Andrea and having known her as a friend and colleague for over 10 years, I had no doubt that she would be nurturing, engaging and full of insight and useful information. All of this was predictably true. However, I was particularly impressed (and, I will admit, pleasantly surprised) by how gracefully she managed to juggle such disparate needs. The participants were varied in terms of experience, confidence, goals and musical literacy, yet Andrea managed to accommodate everybody without any perceptible compromise while creating a genuine and lovely sense of community.
NB, Pianist, music educator, New York

Through sharing your great gift of music with joy, passion, fun, curiosity and love - you supported every person in the workshop to their most powerful and yet relaxed singing moments. You helped to turn the weakest into the strongest parts. I really enjoyed your gentle clarity in teaching and your great sense of humor. It was a real pleasure to experience the workshop and as well the concert! I am still inspired by that."
Workshop participant, Erlangen, Germany

My students were very excited for the rest of the day and talked about you and the things you did through the end of the day.
JM, Choir Teacher, Albemarle H.S.

At the beginning I was rather blocked, but you encouraged me. . . you were so open and friendly that I could also open up, and try to make a voice from my voice. You quickly identified our weaknesses and challenged us to build on our strengths. . . Even now after a few weeks I’m still fascinated by how quickly we were able to make music together. The workshop gave me very much.
GG, voice, flute, Nuremberg

I just wanted to let you know that I got so much out of your workshop. It turned out to be a catalyst for me to do some digging about how I express myself as a singer or if I am even expressing "myself"...I don't have the answers for now but strangely enough, it feels liberating to be asking myself these questions. I also very much enjoyed your show at the Red Poppy, I am so inspired...so thanks again!
Workshop participant, Berkeley, CA

I just wanted to let you know how much I loved the workshop. I have such a clearer sense of what it is I need to work on now that I participated in it. Please put me on the early notification list for the next workshop because I'd love to do it!
Workshop participant, New York

This workshop was a wonderful experience. Andrea is a wonderful leader/teacher. She has a warm, gentle manner and the skill to help each group member find a closer relationship to the music -- while also nourishing a strong group spirit. The workshop was challenging and supportive (and without pressure for us tentative types). And a lot of fun.
DL, voice, songwriter

A wonderfully supportive group experience for people wishing to sing. Andrea is informative, talented, patient, and fun to work with. It was a joy to see how individuals progressed not only with the song material but with their ability to interpret the song and feel comfortable doing so. Lots of smiling faces.

I want to say a big thank you for all you’ve brought to me and my school. These are the moments I’m working for and it is such a good feeling to have you as brothers and sisters in mind. Oh yes, music from the bottom of our souls and hearts will connect us over thousand of miles. Also a big thank you from all the pupils. I saw many of them in the last few days and I can truly say that you’ve touched them deeply.
Oliver Székely, owner, Main Street Music, Erlangen, Germany

A big thank you to you for providing us with excellent advice, instruction, sympathy, and a good natured "kick in the butt". The group dynamics were wonderful. It's amazing that so many of us could come together with such varied backgrounds and lifestyles and create such a fun-loving, caring group of people. This was the best fun I've had in ages! Laughs, learning and singing all rolled into one!
DY, voice

I learned much more and a bigger variety of things than I expected. This was a great, comprehensive workshop.

SCATTING THE BLUES

Scat singing is one of the ways a vocalist can improvise, and it's often the most intimidating. Fortunately, we have the 12 bar blues, a fun and familiar vehicle with an easy-to-absorb harmonic structure that most people can grasp quickly. In this popular class, we'll find our way into scat singing by utilizing basic blues harmony as a jumping off point, exploring swing feel, and developing a personal vocabulary of syllables. This is a “voices on” class with plenty of learning-by-singing in a fun, safe, encouraging atmosphere, an excellent class if you've wanted to explore scat singing but didn't know where to start, or if you've started and want to get stronger.

I highly recommend this course to start your scat journey. I had no prior experience with this type of singing. Upon completion of the course, I was able to scat through the 12-Bar Blues form. Andrea makes the classes so fun. I really appreciated the individual feed back and encouragement she gave us throughout our study! Andrea Wolper is an excellent teacher.
Sudarat S., Florida.

Andrea makes scatting (something I've feared for many years) seem not only possible, but also fun. Her class is constructive, friendly and allows you to feel your way, listen, and just try stuff without getting bent out of shape. Thank you Andrea for helping me work on ideas, skills, and confidence.

SONGWRITING CLASSES

No matter where you are in your songwriting journey, the Songwriters’ Circle will jumpstart creativity and get you writing. This class is for all skill levels, whether you write lyrics, melodies, harmony, or any combination thereof and whether you’re just getting started, or are an experienced songwriter looking for new ideas and motivation. An assignment or prompt will be given the week before each class; you’ll write during the week and then share your work in class to receive constructive feedback. Together we’ll explore the elements of good songwriting, looking at the variety of forms, melodic devices, and lyrics that inspire.

After taking Andrea’s songwriting course my entire musical word changed! I now have a new appreciation for the science that is songwriting and have a much better understanding of how to incorporate my life experiences into it.

One of the great experiences for me last year was to take Andrea Wolper's songwriting class. A new experience for me. I have loved every minute of it. I have written lots of lyrics and even one song - words and music.
Lainie C.

The Songwriter's Circle provided an incredible space for sharing song lyrics, and inspired in me the motivation to complete unfinished pieces of work. Everyone in the class had their own unique style and Andrea welcomed all genres and paces to best support everyone where they were at. Andrea provided prompts and tools that were specific enough to have direction, but vague enough to have freedom of expression. I am so grateful to have been part of the class.
